The GX is developed from the ground up as a “Dual Concept” vehicle – to be equally at home on- or off-road – and tested on the world's roughest terrain, while offering incredible power, safety, roominess and flexibility. This luxury SUV will always get you to your destination in exceptional comfort and inimitable Lexus style.
Combining futuristic design cues with formidable off-road strength, the stunning GX offers all the classic space of a large and powerful SUV. But size has not been achieved at the expense of style. Exuding dynamism and making full use of an impressive wheelbase, its commanding yet reassuring profile gives a resolute impression.
Viewed from the front, the dynamic low-set “spindle grille” with the three-dimensional form of the horizontal bars of the upper grille and the honeycomb of the lower grille emphasizes the bold robust stance. The distinctive low beam LED headlamps and iconic L-shaped LED Daytime Running Lamps provide a refined touch.
From the side, the vehicle's lines and side protection moldings add a wedged and streamlined aspect, again hinting at its athletic and versatile capability, underscored by beautiful 18-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, LED lamp clusters round off the GX's exquisite Lexus styling, while the back door also features a practical, lifting glass hatch. This glass hatch provides easy access to the luggage space without needing to open the back door, offering a convenient way of loading and unloading smaller items.
The GX is a study in contrasts. Outside, the impression is of strength, ruggedness and resolve. Inside, the seven-seat leather luxury and sumptuous cabin are designed to anticipate and answer your every need. All seven leather seats in the GX are extremely inviting, and provide the extra lateral support needed for off-road driving. High-quality perforated leather seating is standard on the GX, with bespoke semi-aniline leather available as an option.
The peace and tranquility of the GX's interior set an entirely new benchmark for luxury SUVs. Numerous measures were taken to help reduce noise and vibration to a minimum, beginning with the advanced “Body on Frame” construction which incorporates sophisticated dampers to absorb vibration. The engine mounts also absorb a significant amount of vibration. Because SUV engines can also create substantial noise, Lexus engineers focused on minimizing friction and enhancing the rotational balance of the engine, as well as using an insulated engine cover to further mute extraneous sound.
Changing the seven-seat configuration in the GX is easy. The second row seats can split 40:20:40 or be reclined. A power mechanism for the third row seats lets you effortlessly fold one or both seats fully flat to accommodate bulky items. There is also a convenient glass hatch in the back door that lets you load the vehicle without having to open the black door in tighter parking spaces.
With the third row seats fully flat, there is ample room for four sets of golf clubs or four large suitcases, secured by luggage hooks and hidden by an optional retractable cover. The active rear air suspension automatically optimizes vehicle height when carrying a heavy load.
Specially developed to fulfil the vehicle's “Dual Concept”, the GX's powerful 4.6-liter V8 gasoline engine offers both extraordinarily smooth on-road performance and incredible torque for off-road driving.
For maximum SUV flexibility, a 6-speed automatic transmission offers fast linear acceleration, quiet high-speed cruising and excellent heavy-duty power. Enabling an ultra-smooth drive, AI (Artificial Intelligence)-SHIFT control software constantly assesses road conditions and driving style to proactively manage the shift pattern. For an even more dynamic drive, the Multi-mode Automatic Transmission also allows manual-style gear changes when the gearshift is in the “S” position.
The GX is one of most capable 4WD vehicles ever built. At its heart is a full-time 4WD system that gives maximum traction on slippery surfaces like snow, mud and ice, while a rugged new TORSEN® LSD (Limited Slip Differential) automatically directs power to the wheels that need it most.
In addition, to ensure that as many wheels as possible stay in contact with the ground, Lexus developed an electronically modulated KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System). When driving off-road, KDSS virtually disconnects the front and rear stabilizer bars so each wheel can apply traction independently to cope with very rough terrain.
The GX SUV is fitted with highly advanced traction and braking systems. When driving off-road, shifting into low range will immediately deliver even more control of torque and speed. For peerless command of wilderness conditions, Multi-terrain Select allows you to easily select the appropriate brake and accelerator settings for Mud & Sand, Loose Rock, Mogul or Rock.
Multi-terrain ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution is another GX breakthrough. It can identify loose surfaces, such as snow or gravel, and automatically adjusts the vehicle's ABS braking characteristics to help you stop more quickly.
The GX's interior warms up as quickly as it cools, thanks to separate air conditioning compressor units in the front and rear of the vehicle. For colder climates, these operate at twice the output of conventional systems, and have been extensively tested in extremes from -45°C up to +45°C. Further comfort is provided by ventilated seats with heating for the front seats and a heated steering wheel. The auto air conditioning system features triple-zone independent temperature controls which enable the driver, front seat passenger and rear seat passengers to control individual climate zones according to their requirements.
No driver can look in four directions at once. So, to give the GX owner a near 360° view of what is going on around the vehicle, an optional Multi-terrain Monitor displays up to six images from the front camera, left and right door mirror cameras (front and rear views) and rear cameras. Camera selection is operated via a multi-information switch on the steering wheel, and is particularly useful for spotting large rocks or ruts next to the vehicle or for looking down from the brow of a hill to see the view below that is normally obstructed by an SUV's hood. Should any of the cameras spot an obstacle that is dangerously close to the vehicle, the clearance sonar device will immediately sound and show the area with the obstacle on the display.
The advanced yet highly intuitive Lexus Navigation System with Bluetooth® is directed either by voice command or using the touch-screen of the Electro Multi-Vision display. One of the fastest and most user-friendly navigation systems available today, it features a dual-map display. The digital maps have been designed to look just like their printed counterparts and are very easy to understand. Key points of interest are shown in lifelike 3D graphics. You can tell the system where you want to go by address, stored destinations or points of interest. It then calculates how quickly you can expect to get to your destination and offers a variety of routes based on distance or journey time.
The GX is available with Lexus' bespoke Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound System, which is among the finest in-car entertainment systems available today. Supplying 5.1-channel audio, the key to its superlative 330-watt performance is 17 speakers, each one custom-engineered for its acoustic location within the cabin. Together with the 8-inch Electro Multi-Vision display, it offers a complete home theater experience that incorporates an in-dash DVD player and 2 USB ports with a mini-jack for an iPod® or other media player.
Because safety begins with an attentive driver, to help ensure you are relaxed and free from distractions the GX incorporates features like Optitron meters that are kind to your eyes. Steering wheel-mounted control switches and voice control let you keep both hands on the wheel. Powerful high beam halogen headlamps contribute to excellent visibility without causing glare to oncoming traffic, while advanced LED headlamps are used for the low beam.
The GX has been engineered to achieve class-leading safety performance. High-tensile steel has been used throughout to produce a still structure that is very effective at absorbing energy in a collision.
The GX also features ten SRS airbags as standard, including front seat SRS knee airbags and SRS side airbags in the outboard second row seats. Running the length of the cabin, SRS curtain shield airbags are programmed to inflate in a rollover situation, helping to protect occupants from impact with the side of the vehicle.
When the millimeter-wave radar pre-crash safety system determines that there is a likelihood of a collision with a vehicle or other obstacle in the road ahead, it alerts the driver with a display and a buzzer, and the pre-crash brake assist operates to increase the braking force when the driver depresses the brake pedal. When it determines that it is difficult to avoid a collision, the pre-crash brakes operate to help reduce the collision speed even if the driver does not apply the brakes. At the same time, the pre-crash seatbelts rewind the front seatbelts before a collision to help reduce injury due to the collision. While braking, the Adaptive Variable Suspension system also activates, controlling the damping force of the shock absorbers to help suppress the vehicle's tendency to nose-dive.
